ExxonMobil and Shell still squeezing the Netherlands behind closed doors over Groningen gas field shutdown

As ExxonMobil shareholders gather for the annual meeting on 27 May, serious questions remain about the company's response to the closure of the Groningen gas field in the Netherlands .

ExxonMobil and Shell filed several international arbitration claims against the Dutch state, seeking compensation for lost future profits linked to the closure of the Groningen gas field in the Netherlands.

The arbitration proceedings take place outside public courts and could result in billions in public money being redirected toward corporate compensation claims instead of climate action, public services and community recovery.

Stop corporate squeezing of public resources!

  • ExxonMobil shareholders should urge the company to drop the claim against the Netherlands and stop undermining democratic decisions to protect people and planet.

  • The Dutch government should abolish the harmful system of Investor State Dispute Settlement (ISDS), that allows companies to file claims against states for taking measures in the public interest, including for climate justice.
